Serenity

Serenity is a kit poem. This is a poetry form I invented that takes inspiration from word games like Mad Libs. Like Mad Libs, words can be assigned to specific places, based on their grammatical function. Where kit poems differ is in their dual function. 

Kit poems stand alone as finished pieces, but they also serve as communal, modular art pieces to help create other poems. In a kit poem, each interchangeable word is assigned a superscript number that corresponds to a numbered category in an attached word bank, chosen by the poet. 

In fixed verse forms of kit poetry, the word bank is confined to words that are not only grammatically coherent, but are metrically compatible with any other interchangeable words assigned with that number. For this reason, kit poems serve as poems, word games and linguistic instruction at the same time.
